Coalition: Peter Obi enjoys our full support â€" Labour Party  distances itself from claims by Julius Abure

The Labour Party National Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has debunked claims suggesting that Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, was participating in opposition coalition talks without the party’s backing.
 

In a statement issued by Ken Asogwa, Special Adviser on Media to Senator Usman, the committee reaffirmed its full awareness of and support for Obi’s involvement in the coalition efforts.
 

“The attention of the Labour Party leadership has been drawn to reports implying that certain former members of our party, led by suspended chairman Barr. Julius Abure, disapprove of Peter Obi’s involvement in the ongoing coalition movement aimed at rescuing Nigeria from the failed APC administration in 2027,” the statement read.

“To be clear, the National Caretaker Committee of the Labour Party, under the leadership of Distinguished Senator Nenadi Usman, expressly approved and endorsed Peter Obi’s participation in this patriotic convergence of well-meaning Nigerians determined to challenge the current rudderless Tinubu administration.”

The committee emphasized that Obi’s involvement is in line with the core principles of the Labour Party.
 

“Obi has repeatedly stated that his commitment is to a coalition focused on eliminating hunger, insecurity, and poor governanceâ€"objectives that align with the foundational values of our party,” the statement added.
 

The committee questioned the motives of those opposing Obi’s efforts, especially those expelled from the party for anti-party activities.
 

“It is baffling that individuals who have been expelled for working against the party now seek to undermine a move clearly rooted in national interest. One must wonder whose agenda Julius Abure and his allies are truly advancing. Do they dispute the fact that Nigeria is in crisis and that decisive collective action is necessary?”
 

The party further affirmed that Obi retains the full right to contest the 2027 elections on the Labour Party platform if the coalition does not succeed.
 

“The Labour Party remains fully committed to this people-driven coalition but also reaffirms Peter Obi’s unequivocal right to contest the 2027 elections under our banner, should coalition efforts not materialize.”
 

The statement also dismissed the validity of the 2024 national convention organized by the Abure faction.
 

“It is laughable that Abure and his group continue to reference a self-convened, illegal convention that has already been declared unlawful by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Any reference to that event is not only misleading but shows blatant disregard for the Supreme Court’s judgment and should be treated accordingly by the relevant legal authorities.”

The committee concluded by advising the public to disregard statements from those it described as impostors.
 

“For accurate and official information about the Labour Party, the public should rely solely on communications from the office of the National Caretaker Committee led by Distinguished Senator Nenadi Usman.”
