A Nigerian journalist, Anastasia Odochi Uchenna-Ozoemena, has emphasised the importance of married women establishing strong financial safety nets to secure their wellbeing in the event of a divorce.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Anastasia shared a personal story about how her aunt’s marriage ended after her husband had a child with another woman. This woman, referred to as the side chick, gave birth to a boy, and the husband chose to marry her because all of his other children were girls.

Anastasia also referenced the case of Yul and May Edochie, as well as another divorced woman she recently spoke with. 

While acknowledging that no woman plans to get divorced after marriage, she stressed the importance of being prepared for unexpected challenges in life, such as a partner leaving the marriage and women going to great lengths to attract married men.

She wrote;

“I recently had a conversation with a divorcee. The divorce pained her so well because she left the marriage broke, heartbroken and battered,” she wrote.
