Gospel singer âNew Jerusalemâ is dead

Nigerian gospel singer Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, widely known as New Jerusalem, has died at the age of 53.
His passing has left the Christian community in Benue State heartbroken, especially among those who admired his dedication to spreading the gospel through music. Known for transforming Tiv Swange rhythms into a gospel sound that connected deeply with both local and international audiences, New Jerusalemâs influence stretched far beyond Nigeria.
Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the late singerâs residence in Makurdi, alongside members of the Brethren Prayer Group. He described New Jerusalem as âa devoted Christian whose songs deeply touched my heart.â
Ortom also shared a memory of watching an Australian programme where a Tiv man played Ikyereveâs music while teachingâ"a moment he described as proof of the singerâs global impact.
Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, the late singerâs elder brother, thanked Ortom for his consistent support throughout Israelâs illness. He revealed that one of Israelâs sons was named âOrtomâ in honour of the former governorâs kindness.
Prayers at the visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo.
New Jerusalem is survived by his wife, gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children.
His burial is scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
