Lagos police damage driver’s gear, order man to remove earrings in viral video
A viral video circulating on social media has stirred outrage after showing Nigerian police officers and BRT enforcement agents along Ikorodu Road, Lagos, allegedly damaging a driver’s vehicle while attempting to stop him.
In the footage, one of the officers is seen forcibly shifting the moving car’s gear into park mode, an action that could have resulted in serious mechanical damage or an accident.
The driver, who claimed he was within his designated lane, can be heard protesting as the officer’s action reportedly disrupted his vehicle’s transmission system.
Officers accused of targeting motorists for extortion
Another part of the viral clip shows enforcement officers engaging with pedestrians and drivers in what witnesses claim are acts of extortion.
Commuters alleged that these officers, often stationed along the BRT corridor, stop vehicles for minor or unclear offences and demand payments to let motorists go.
The officers’ activities have become more aggressive in recent weeks, with motorists calling for government intervention. “Those ones near Maryland are the worst,†one commuter commented. “If your tyre even touches the BRT lane for one second, they’ll pounce on you.â€
Earrings harassment adds to public concern
In a separate but related video, officers were seen confronting a young man for wearing earrings, ordering him to remove them despite no existing law prohibiting such personal expression.
The act has drawn mixed reactions online, with some Nigerians defending the officers’ discretion while others called it a violation of civil rights.
One commenter noted that “there’s too much insecurity in the land than to worry about a man wearing earrings,†while another argued that the officers acted professionally since “they disarmed the man without spilling blood.â€
However, civil society groups have condemned the incident as another example of abuse of power by law enforcement agents.
They urged authorities to retrain officers on human rights and public engagement, stressing that professionalism and respect for citizens’ dignity must guide all policing actions.
