Mourinho: Newcastle’s power too much for Benfica
Jose Mourinho admitted his Benfica side were no match for Newcastle United’s pace and physicality after a 3-0 Champions League defeat at St. James’ Park on Tuesday night.
Benfica showed intent early on, with Dodi Lukebakio striking the post, but Newcastle’s soon took over.
Anthony Gordon opened the scoring before substitute Harvey Barnes added a brace in the second half, while Jacob Murphy caused havoc down the right, assisting the first goal with a brilliant cross.
Mourinho admits his team were outmuscled
“The difference was in the physical power,†Mourinho said post-match. “We couldn’t compete with their horsepower. In the first half, we were organised and created chances, but after conceding, our structure fell apart. Newcastle have four lightning-fast wingers, they just kept coming.â€
He added that Benfica’s missed chances proved costly. “If we score first, the story changes. The second goal killed us mentally, and from there, it was one-way traffic.â€
Gordon shines as Howe hails his forwards
Anthony Gordon continued his fine European form, becoming the first Newcastle player to score in three straight Champions League games.
“It means everything,†Gordon said. “We had so many chances, I’m glad one went in. Credit to Jacob [Murphy] for the assist.â€
Eddie Howe praised his attacking trio, calling their display “dynamic and ruthless.†“Anthony was outstanding, Jacob’s delivery was superb and Harvey’s finishing was top-class,†Howe said. “It’ll give all three huge confidence.â€
Next Tests await both sides
Newcastle, now seventh in the Champions League league phase, will host Fulham in the Premier League this weekend.
