“Heads up, boys!†â€" Messi comforts Argentina U20s after World Cup heartbreak against Morocco
Lionel Messi has sent a heartfelt message to Argentina’s Under-20 team after their painful FIFA U20 World Cup final loss to Morocco.
The young Albiceleste, who had aimed to replicate the senior team’s global triumph, fell short of expectations.
Messi, who has consistently backed Argentina’s youth sides, took to social media to comfort the players, emphasizing pride over disappointment following the defeat.
A disappointing end to a strong campaign
Argentina entered the tournament as favourites, given their record success at the U20 level, and impressed throughout the campaign, netting 15 goals and conceding only two before the final.
However, Morocco proved formidable, defending compactly and capitalizing on their chances to seal a 2-0 win.
The result marked 20 years since Messi himself lifted the FIFA World Youth Championship trophy in 2005. This time, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner could only watch as the next generation’s dream slipped away.
Messi urges youngsters to stay proud
Despite the heartbreak, Messi praised coach Diego Placente’s side for their fighting spirit.
He wrote on Instagram: “Heads up, boys! You had an incredible tournament, and even though we all wanted to see you lift the trophy, we’re left with pride and joy for how you represented our colours.â€
Focus shifts back to Inter Miami
Messi, still performing at the highest level at age 38, now turns his focus to club duties with Inter Miami.
After scoring 29 goals in 28 league appearances and clinching the MLS Golden Boot, he’s set to make history again by becoming the first player to win back-to-back MVP awards in North America.
Negotiations for a contract extension are reportedly near completion, with the deal expected to keep him in South Florida through next summer’s World Cup, where he’s widely expected to lead Argentina’s title defence in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
