JUST-IN: Wike explains viral clash with soldiers, vows to stop illegal development, accuses ex-Naval chief
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly criticised the alleged forceful occupation of a disputed land in Abuja by military personnel said to be acting under the directive of a retired Chief of Naval Staff.
Wike described the soldiers’ action as unlawful and an assault on constituted authority.
He stated this during an on-site visit on Tuesday following reports that armed personnel had prevented FCT officials from enforcing development control orders on the property.
Minister Decries Use of Military Power for Intimidation
The minister explained that he had earlier ordered a halt to all activities on the land after discovering that the developers lacked proper approval and documentation.
According to him, the intervention of the soldiers to drive away FCTA staff was unacceptable and a clear attempt to undermine the law.
“When this was brought to my attention, I instructed the officials to ensure that nothing continues there because there were no valid approvals or legal claims to the property,†Wike said.
He revealed that the soldiers’ interference prompted him to personally inspect the site, noting that such behaviour was disappointing, especially from someone who once served at the highest military level.
Wike Reaffirms No One Is Above the Law
“I don’t understand how a person who held that kind of position cannot simply come to my office to discuss the matter,†Wike said.
“Because he’s a military man, he thinks he can use that to intimidate Nigerians. I won’t tolerate such lawlessness or blackmail.â€
The minister also noted that the supposed developers failed to present any legal documents when asked by the FCTA Development Control officials.
“The Director asked them to show land ownership papers and building approval, but they had none,†he said. “How can we let this level of illegality continue, especially when ordinary Nigerians follow the rules?â€
Wike emphasised that the FCT Administration would continue to enforce development laws without fear or favour. He said he had already spoken with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who promised to address the situation.
He maintained that the government would not tolerate the misuse of military power to obstruct lawful enforcement, warning that all illegal developments, regardless of who is behind them, would be stopped.
“We won’t allow this to happen,†Wike declared. “The law applies to everyone equally â€" whether you’re a former naval chief or a private citizen.â€
